Service Beyond the Uniform: Bundaberg RSL Mowing Crew Supports Local Veterans

Bundaberg RSL mowing crew volunteers preparing lawn equipment to support local Veterans

Every Wednesday morning, while much of the community is still getting started for the
day, a dedicated team of Bundaberg RSL volunteers is already hard at work.
Trailers are loaded, fuel is checked, and the mowers and whipper snippers are ready to
go. The Bundaberg RSL mowing crew then heads out across the local area with one
important purpose: to lend a helping hand to Veterans who need it.
The volunteers freely give their time to mow lawns, tidy gardens and help local Veterans
maintain their homes. For someone experiencing health challenges, reduced mobility or
difficult personal circumstances, keeping up with yard maintenance can quickly become
overwhelming. The practical support provided by the mowing crew can make an enormous difference.

More Than a Mowing Service
Although lawn care is an important part of the program, the work of the Bundaberg RSL
mowing crew goes far beyond maintaining yards.
Each visit also provides an opportunity to stop, have a conversation and check in with a
fellow Veteran.
A friendly chat can be just as valuable as the physical work being completed,
particularly for Veterans who may be experiencing social isolation or missing the
camaraderie and connection that came with their time in service.
These regular visits remind Veterans that they remain an important part of the
Bundaberg community and that support is available when they need it.

Practical Support for Veterans in Bundaberg
Maintaining a home and garden can become challenging because of illness, injury,
disability, age or changing personal circumstances.
By helping with mowing, edging and general yard tidying, the volunteers provide
practical assistance that can:
 Reduce stress and physical pressure for Veterans.
 Help Veterans feel safe and comfortable in their homes.

 Restore pride in a well-maintained yard.
 Create opportunities for conversation and social connection.
 Identify when a Veteran may benefit from additional support.
The result is much more than a freshly mown lawn. It is a visible demonstration of care,
respect and mateship.

Community, Camaraderie and Continued Service
Service does not stop when the uniform comes off.
The members of the Bundaberg RSL mowing crew continue to serve their community
by supporting their mates and helping local Veterans remain connected.
The volunteers do not give their time for praise or recognition. They turn up each week
because they genuinely care about the wellbeing of fellow Veterans.
Their actions reflect the values at the heart of the RSL: service, respect, compassion,
camaraderie and a commitment to ensuring that no Veteran is forgotten.

The Importance of Regular Veteran Check-Ins
Programs like the Bundaberg RSL mowing service also demonstrate the importance of
regular, informal check-ins.
A conversation in the front yard can create a comfortable opportunity for a Veteran to
share how they are going or ask for assistance. It can also provide reassurance that
someone cares and will continue to show up.
These moments of connection help strengthen relationships throughout the Veteran
community and can reduce feelings of loneliness and isolation.

Volunteering That Makes a Genuine Difference

The mowing crew is an inspiring example of community volunteering at its best.
The program brings people together around a shared purpose, provides meaningful
opportunities for continued service and helps preserve the strong sense of camaraderie
that exists among Veterans.
Week after week, the crew works together to provide practical assistance while building
trusted relationships within the community.
Bundaberg RSL is extremely fortunate to have such a generous, dependable and
hardworking group of volunteers supporting this important initiative.
