A 93-year-old local Veteran has finally received long-overdue recognition for his service to Australia, following a heartfelt visit to the Bundaberg RSL Sub Branch and the dedicated support of its team.
Len Mahaffey was just 19 years old when he was called up for National Service, going on to serve his country for seven years. Like many of his generation, Mr Mahaffey quietly returned to civilian life after his discharge, unaware of the support networks, assistance and entitlements available to him.
Earlier this year, Len and his wife visited their local Sub Branch after receiving a printed email from a family member who had encouraged him to connect with the RSL and explore any potential entitlements.
From that simple gesture, a remarkable journey unfolded. Bundaberg RSL Sub Branch Wellbeing Advocate, Jackie Stemm, assisted Mr Mahaffey in applying for his service records and supported him through the process of obtaining his White Card.
During her research, Jackie made a very special discovery – Len was entitled to two service medals he had never received.
This week, Jackie had the privilege of presenting Mr Mahaffey with both the Australian National Service Medal and the Australian Defence Medal.
It was a deeply moving moment, with Mr Mahaffey sitting proudly – and just a little emotional – as he finally received the recognition he so rightly deserves.
His story is a powerful reminder that it is never too late to honour the service of our Veterans and ensure they receive the support, recognition and respect they have earned.
Bundaberg RSL Sub Branch is encouraging families, friends and community members to have conversations with loved ones who may have served, especially those who may not be aware of the assistance or entitlements available to them.
“If you have a family member, friend, or neighbour who has served our country, give them a gentle nudge to come and see us,” a spokesperson said.
“There are many Veterans out there who may not realise what support or recognition they are entitled to. We’re here to help.”
Mr Mahaffey’s story highlights the important role the RSL continues to play in supporting Veterans of all ages – helping to ensure no service goes unrecognised.
