Connecting Generations Through Stories of Service
Bundaberg RSL Sub Branch was proud to see students from Bundaberg State High School sit down with local
Vietnam Veterans for a meaningful lunch and conversation as part of the RSL Senior Schools Public
Speaking Competition.
The special gathering gave students the opportunity to hear firsthand accounts of Australia’s involvement in
the Vietnam War, learning not only about the history of the conflict, but also about the personal experiences,
challenges and reflections of those who served.
Students spoke with local Vietnam Veterans including Norm Quarrell, David Barker and Tony Wass, whose
stories offered powerful insight into service, sacrifice, mateship, resilience and the lasting impact of war. The
conversations were warm, honest and deeply valuable, helping the students better understand the human
stories behind Australia’s military history.
For the students, the lunch provided more than research for their public speaking entries. It was an
opportunity to connect across generations, ask thoughtful questions and gain a deeper appreciation for the
men and women who answered our nation’s call.

Senior Schools Public Speaking Competition 2026
Building on the value of these conversations, the Bundaberg RSL Sub Branch is pleased to present the
Senior Schools Public Speaking Competition 2026, open to all Bundaberg region senior school students in
Grades 10 to 12.
The 2026 theme is: Explore the political implications of Australia’s participation in the Vietnam War.
Students are invited to consider the theme through areas such as:
The individual roles, actions and effectiveness of the three services
A comparison of Australia’s participation with that of other countries
Personal interpretation and opinion
The competition encourages young people to research, reflect and speak with confidence on an important
chapter of Australia’s military history. By engaging with veterans’ stories and historical perspectives, students
gain a deeper understanding of service, sacrifice, leadership and the ongoing importance of remembrance.
