Bundaberg RSL Club recently hosted its second Lunch with a Veteran event, the largest held to date, reinforcing the Club’s ongoing commitment to supporting veterans, schools, and the wider Bundaberg community.

Developed through early discussions with local teachers ahead of the Bundaberg RSL Club Public Speaking Competition, Lunch with a Veteran was designed to give students direct access to the real-life experiences of Australian veterans. The program provides meaningful, first-hand insight that enhances student learning and strengthens understanding of Australia’s military history.

Due to strong interest from educators, the initiative has expanded beyond public speaking and is now being integrated into Modern History programs in Bundaberg schools, particularly those focused on wartime and military studies. By connecting veterans with students, the program bridges the gap between classroom learning and lived experience.

At the most recent event, Year 12 Modern History students from Kepnock State High School in Bundaberg joined five Vietnam War veterans for an engaging and respectful lunchtime discussion. The students had recently commenced their studies on the Vietnam War, making the opportunity to speak directly with Vietnam veterans especially valuable.

The event delivered lasting benefits for everyone involved. Students gained a deeper appreciation of Australia’s service history, while the veterans welcomed the opportunity to share their stories, reflect on their experiences, and connect with young people from local Bundaberg schools.
